UnTab is a productivity tool to boost your browser workflow!
Most of us have dozens of open tabs, and it quickly becomes cumbersome to manage them efficiently. UnTab is a browser extension that gives you superpowers by making it possible to search through open tabs and perform common actions with just a few keystrokes. This in turn boosts productivity and makes you look like a hero!
Currently, UnTab is being built as a browser extension for Chrome and Chromium based browsers. All features work on Firefox too except for favicons which would be solved in the coming days.

Project Setup
Clone the repository

cd untab
Understanding the directory structure
src: Primary source directory where the magic happens!background: Background Script for the extensioncontent: Content Script for the extensioncomponents: UI components written using Svelte. (App.svelte is the main root component)manifest.json: Extension manifest file
dist: This directory contains the built files from thesrcrollup.config.js: Project build configuration is setup using rollup.
Build the project
To install the extension on the browser, first build the project using the following command.
npm run build
All the built files are generated in the dist directory.
Install on Browser
- Go to the extensions page on your browser. For Chrome and Chromium-based browsers go to
chrome://extensions - Turn ON
Developer mode - Click on
Load Unpacked - Select the
distfolder that was generated after the build step. The extension should now show up on the list - Go to any page and press
Ctrl+Shift+SpaceorCommand+Shift+Space(on Mac) to open UnTab. - NOTE: Whenever, the build files are changed, to get the changes synced with the installed extension, click on the reload icon next to the installed extension.

Improvements include:
- Change hotkey from Ctrl+Space to Ctrl+Shift+Space (to avoid conflict with Mac)
- Showing results when the input is empty
- Showing the number of results and navigation help
- Tested the extension with Firefox and guess what - it worked!
The complete set of features of the extension works. Some changes to favicons need to be made as they cannot be accessed on Firefox.
History searching and more plugins! 💯
The last few hours have been really productive! UnTab can now search through recent histories and categorize them better on the UI. This literally improves the extension by 10x and increases productivity.
Even when under development, UnTab has become a time saver for me personally :)
Tab actions and basic plugins API 😎
Plugins system would make UnTab infinitely more powerful as it allows for actions created by the community that I cannot think of right now! To test the implementation of this system I wrote a few common tab actions.

Tab Searching and Switching now complete! 🎉
Tab Searching and Switching were the crucial parts of UnTab, and now that it is complete, I can spend time adding other common tab actions and implementing a plugins system that would allow the community to extend the functionality of UnTab even more!

Finally got the Tab Switching working! README is an integral part of a FOSS project, hence updated it with more information and steps to run the project.
UnTab is now MIT Licensed!
Improvements to styles ✨
New styles have made UnTab look much better than before! These changes also improved the component structure.
The layout and trigger mechanism of the extension is ready 🎉
Updates: - Basic Interface for the search bar is built - Ctrl+Space mapping to open search bar - Escape key to the close search bar (understanding messaging between iframe and window took longer than expected) - Fade in and out transitions when the search bar is opened/closed.
The project has been initiated with Svelte project setup and some build steps that will improve the development workflow 💙
